What is the carnival?

The carnival is a public celebration, which takes place immediately before the Christian Lent, dated variable, combining elements such as costumes, parades and street parties. By extension some similar parties are named in any season. Despite the great differences that its celebration presents in the world, their common characteristic is that of being a period of permissiveness and some slippage.

Origin of carnival in Ecuador

The origin of its celebration seems likely of pagan festivals, such as those performed in honor of Bacchus, the god of wine, the Roman Saturnalia and Lupercalia, or those performed in honor of the Apis bull in Egypt. According to some historians, the origins of this festival date back to ancient Sumeria and Egypt more than 5000 years ago, with celebrations very similar in the Roman Empire, where the custom in Europe expanded, being brought to America by the Spanish and Portuguese in the fifteenth century sailors.

Carnival characters

Taita Carnaval. During the four days of Carnival is celebrated not only symbolizes the friendliness of the guarandeños but also chairs the parades and dances to the village band.

Typical music

Most Popular Carnivals

The holidays are the most popular carnivals in Guaranda and Ambato.

In Guaranda, the carnival celebration is marked by parades and processions, accompanied by the typical drink of the area, the "Blue Bird", which is consumed by spectators and participants of the groups, also in Guaranda even played with water and foam carnival, and at night, artistic presentations bring together hundreds of tourists in the streets and parks.
The carnival of Ambato, differs from the rest of celebrations for its cultural troupes, in which students from schools and colleges in the city, and invited delegations from other cities and countries involved. The arrays of floats are made with fruits, flowers and pieces of bread. Ambato is the only city where the carnival takes place without water or foam carnival, making it one of the most striking celebrations of the country.
